At mid life she discovers a vocation to join a cloistered order of nuns. Her husband died in a Japanese prisoner of war camp, and we discover much later that she is also a bereaved mother. The story begins in the mid 1950s and the main character is Philippa Talbot, a forty year old senior civil servant, apparently in something like the Treasury. The monetary is a kind of spiritual power station, generating praise, thanksgiving, and intercessions for those in need. Though they would appear cut off from the world, they are continually involved. Seven times a day, from Vigils at 4 am to Comline at 8.30 pm they chant the daily office in Latin, praying for their community, for the world, and for people outside who have asked their intercessions. If prayer were an Olympic event, the nuns at Brede would be gold medalists. I felt so deeply immersed in Benedictine spirituality that when I looked out my front window I almost expected to see a cloister. This was the perfect read for self-isolating, a story of women monastics. ![]() ![]() ![]() On a light note, if there is one, I kept hearing Sylvester Stallone in "Judge Dredd" saying, "I AM the law" whenever The Officer spoke about how The Condemned had come to be condemned. The extreme belief that anyone showing any humanity towards others is weak, haunts us every day. 30 years later, George Orwell published Nineteen Eighty-Four. Not because of the actual killing device, but is pretty horrific on its own, but for the attitude of The Officer toward crime and punishment. This poor man works hard to support his family, but in return, they and the bureaucrats he works for believe him to be nothing more than a "bug." And all anyone can do is be horrified that he can no longer work and treat him even more poorly."In The Penal Colony" was horrifying. Our last test in my Children’s Lit class is in a few weeks and so I’ve been reading the four assigned books for the exam (Bridge to Terabithia, The Giver, A Wrinkle in Time, and Beowulf: A New Telling). The writing is so simple, so unadorned and then the ending hits you like a ton of bricks. And I even more rarely cry over books or movies. I sobbed through the last twenty pages, trying to be quiet so as not to awaken my snoozing roommate. ![]() I’d never read it before and I only vaguely knew what was going to happen from snippets I’d heard over the years. She quickly fell asleep and I finished the whole Bridge to Terabithia book. I remember coming home from church and my roommate and I each lay down on a couch in the living room. I’d read Bridge to Terabithia in the summer of 2005. When I read Jacob Have I Loved last year, I was disappointed in it not only because the book itself didn’t thrill me, but because it couldn’t come close to comparing with Bridge to Terabithia. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() "The geography of India and the pilgrimage centres are more or less contiguous.
